Pencil Finance Completes $1 Million Onchain Student-Loan Cycle

1 reports · First detected 2026-09-03 · Last active 2026-09-03

Pencil Finance is a real-world asset protocol that moves student lending and investor cash flows onto blockchain rails. The model targets borrowers in Southeast Asia who often lack access to conventional credit, while giving funders a verifiable record of loan deployment, repayments and yield distribution. The completed cycle tests whether tokenized finance can broaden access to education funding without relying solely on traditional banks or opaque offchain reporting.

On Sept. 3, 2026, Pencil Finance said it had completed its first $1 million fully onchain student-loan cycle. Animoca Brands, Open Campus and New Campus funded the pool in July 2025, using a senior tranche with fixed returns and a junior tranche offering variable returns while absorbing first-loss risk. The financing reached about 6,600 students across 118 Southeast Asian schools and universities; roughly 1,050 received funds directly. Women represented 50% of borrowers, and 93% came from lower-income households.
