Samsung Electronics Union Approves May Strike, Threatening Global AI Chip Supply Chain

14 reports · First detected 2026-03-18 · Last active 2026-05-20

Samsung Electronics is a major global supplier of memory chips and high-bandwidth memory, or HBM, products that are critical to AI accelerator production. With labor and management deadlocked over performance bonuses and profit-sharing, about 48,000–50,000 union members were preparing to walk off the job. JPMorgan estimated that Samsung’s revenue could fall by 4 trillion won.

Union members authorized a strike with 93% support and had planned to begin an 18-day full-scale walkout on May 21. Although the action was postponed at the last minute and members voted on a preliminary agreement, the latest negotiations also collapsed. The union then announced another general strike starting the following day, while Samsung shares fell as much as 4% intraday. A court separately ruled that the union must not disrupt production, imposing a fine of 100 million won for each day of noncompliance.

Samsung Electronics is a major global memory-chip and foundry company. Demand for AI servers has fueled a semiconductor recovery and a rebound in corporate profits, prompting employees to press more forcefully for a share of the gains. The talks centered on performance bonuses for the semiconductor division, with implications for profit sharing and competition for talent across South Korea’s technology sector.

Samsung Electronics and its union reached a tentative agreement at the last minute, averting a full-scale strike scheduled for May 21. The proposal includes a new performance-bonus system and profit targets, with attention focused on a 600 million won bonus, a 10.5% performance benchmark and a 10-year stock arrangement. The news lifted Samsung shares by about 5% to 7%, while SK hynix rose as much as 11%.
