Block Opens Cash App Score to Outside Lenders

2 reports · First detected 2026-09-02 · Last active 2026-09-02

Block’s Cash App Score uses cash-flow and transaction data to assess borrowers who may have thin or nonexistent files at traditional credit bureaus. The proprietary model has largely supported lending within the Cash App ecosystem. Making its insights available beyond Block could broaden the use of alternative data in consumer underwriting and help lenders evaluate customers who are often underserved by conventional credit scores.

Block said it is partnering with Nova Credit to give outside lenders access to insights from Cash App Score for the first time. Nova Credit will make the cash-flow-based assessment available through its credit infrastructure, extending its reach to financial institutions seeking a fuller view of prospective borrowers. The companies did not disclose the value of the agreement, name participating lenders or provide a date for a broader rollout.

The Backstory

The history behind this event
Block Expands Digital Lending, Challenging Traditional Banks2026-07-17 · 1 reports · similarity 0.80

Fintech giant Block has long used its Cash App mobile payments platform to expand its digital-finance business. As the gig economy and younger generations have grown, traditional banks’ strict credit-assessment systems have made funding difficult to obtain for people without regular salaries. Cash App Borrow offers alternative small-dollar credit tailored to those customers, filling an unmet financing need and formally signaling fintech companies’ push into traditional banks’ core lending business.

Block’s expansion accelerated significantly after it secured approval from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) for lending-related licenses. By July 2026, lending through the service had surged past $27 billion. The milestone shows that the fintech threat has become a reality, intensifying direct competition between Block and traditional banks in consumer lending this summer.
