Santander UK Pledges No More Branch Closures Before 2028

1 reports · First detected 2026-07-22 · Last active 2026-07-22

Britain’s banks have steadily reduced their physical networks as customers shift to digital services, raising concerns about access for older people, cash users and those who rely on face-to-face support. Santander UK changed course after announcing 44 additional closures earlier in 2026, while its acquisition of TSB put the future of the enlarged branch network and the balance between cost savings and customer access under scrutiny.

Chief Executive Mahesh Aditya said on July 22, 2026, that Santander UK did not intend to close any additional Santander or TSB branches before 2028 at the earliest. The pledge covers 305 Santander locations and 175 TSB branches. Santander completed its £2.65 billion purchase of TSB on April 30. For the six months through June 30, pretax profit fell 31% to £528 million, reflecting motor-finance provisions and higher restructuring and credit-impairment charges.
