Taipei Metro Rolls Out Visa and Mastercard Contactless Payments Across Network
Taipei Metro previously relied mainly on stored-value transit cards such as EasyCard for station entry, requiring overseas visitors and occasional riders to buy or top up tickets first. The network-wide rollout of Mastercard and Visa contactless payments allows passengers to tap through fare gates using credit cards or three major mobile wallets. The move lowers barriers to travel and intensifies competition among international card networks and issuing banks in the public-transit payments market.
Taipei Metro enabled Mastercard and Visa contactless payments across its network on July 1, 2026. Passengers can enter and exit stations with compatible credit cards or any of the three major mobile wallets. To mark the launch, Mastercard, Visa and participating card issuers introduced fare promotions offering up to 100% cashback to customers who meet specified campaign requirements.

The move makes travel easier for domestic commuters and international visitors, while Taishin Bank, the exclusive acquirer for the expanded payment system, is helping digitalize public transit payments.
Taipei Metro fully enabled the expanded payment options on July 1, allowing passengers to tap in with domestic and international credit and debit cards, as well as mobile wallets including Apple Pay and Google Pay. Taishin Bank is offering new customers rewards of up to NT$100, along with weekly rewards, while Visa has launched a limited-time offer providing up to 100% cashback on fares.
