Crypto Recovery Specialists Crack Claimed $1 Billion Wallet, Find $10
Crypto self-custody gives holders direct control of their assets but offers no bank-style reset when a password, seed phrase or hardware wallet is lost. Recovery firms attempt to reconstruct the credentials needed to access an existing wallet; they cannot retrieve coins that were never there. The business therefore combines technical forensics with significant security and credibility risks, since anyone obtaining a valid wallet backup may control the funds.
Cointelegraph reported on Sept. 3, 2026, that Crypto Asset Recovery founder Chris Brooks was contacted in 2021 by a client identified as Rusty. The client said he and two others had won 5,000 Bitcoin in litigation, then worth about $53 million, and showed Brooks what appeared to be $1 billion in Ether. Brooks and his son Charlie flew to Georgia the next day and tested dozens of recovery seeds, but found only about $10 in Bitcoin. Brooks could not establish whether the wallets had ever held the claimed assets.
