Alibaba Revenue Rises 9% on AI Cloud Boom as Profit Plunges

1 reports · First detected 2026-08-21 · Last active 2026-08-21

Alibaba Group is accelerating a shift from its e-commerce roots toward artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure, pledging at least 380 billion yuan ($56 billion) over three years. The strategy is designed to turn demand for its Qwen models and enterprise AI services into a second growth engine alongside Taobao and Tmall. The commitment makes cloud growth a key test of whether Alibaba can commercialize AI fast enough to offset the heavy cost of data centers, computing capacity and chips.

On Aug. 20, Alibaba reported revenue of 268.95 billion yuan ($39.6 billion) for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, up 9% from a year earlier. Cloud and computing services revenue climbed 45% to 48.44 billion yuan, while AI-related product revenue posted triple-digit growth for a 12th consecutive quarter. Net income slumped 75% to 10.5 billion yuan as capital expenditure rose 75% to 67.68 billion yuan. Alibaba’s U.S.-listed shares fell more than 3% after the results.

Alibaba Q4 Profit Plunges as AI and Cloud Revenue Grows 38%2026-05-13 · 2 reports · similarity 0.82

Alibaba Group is shifting its growth focus from traditional e-commerce platforms such as Taobao and Tmall toward Alibaba Cloud and generative AI. However, spending on cloud infrastructure and customer acquisition for the Qwen app, along with subsidies aimed at countering JD.com and Meituan in instant retail, is squeezing near-term profit. That makes the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026 a key test of whether heavy investment can translate into high-margin revenue.

Alibaba reported on May 13, 2026, that revenue for the quarter ended March 31 rose 3% from a year earlier to 243.38 billion yuan. Adjusted EBITA fell 84% to 5.102 billion yuan, while adjusted net income was just 86 million yuan. Cloud Intelligence revenue increased 38% to 41.626 billion yuan, while AI product revenue reached 8.971 billion yuan and posted triple-digit growth for the 11th consecutive quarter.
