Digital Sovereignty
Digital sovereignty refers to the ability of governments and societies to maintain independent control over data, cloud services, AI, digital identity and critical computing infrastructure under their own laws. Europe has recently increased investment in sovereign cloud services, AI supercomputers and homegrown national security analytics, while using initiatives such as GITEX AI EUROPE to chart a development roadmap. However, the EU digital wallet may depend on U.S. technology giants for verification, while global reliance on U.S. AI technology has fueled a backlash and concerns over “AI colonization.” The issue has implications for cybersecurity, industrial competition, cross-border regulation and the autonomy of public services, making it an important topic to watch.
