PreStocks Collapse Exposes Legal-Structure Risks in Solana Tokenized Equities
In May 2026, spot trading volume for tokenized equities on Solana totaled about $869 million, accounting for 97% of all on-chain volume. Other blockchains recorded just $24 million combined. Although products from Backpack, Ondo, xStocks and PreStocks all track share prices, their legal structures encompass redeemable underlying shares, notes, tracking certificates and synthetic exposure through special-purpose vehicles, or SPVs. On May 13, 2026, Anthropic and OpenAI warned that transfers of their shares without written consent, including through SPVs or tokenized instruments, could be invalid. Their respective PreStocks tokens fell 38% and 46%. The Anthropic pool held only about $333,000 in stablecoins and $18,000 worth of SOL, highlighting the legal, liquidity and redemption risks of synthetic structures.
