AI Chip Boom Accelerates Race for Glass Substrates

The shift toward heterogeneous integration is forcing chipmakers to connect processors, memory and other components within increasingly large advanced packages. Glass substrates are emerging as a potential successor to organic materials because their lower warpage, greater flatness and dimensional stability could improve manufacturing yields and signal performance. That makes the technology strategically important as artificial-intelligence accelerators become larger, denser and more demanding.

Commercial adoption still depends on solving production challenges including through-glass via, or TGV, drilling, metallization and optical inspection. Costs, throughput and yields must also be proven at scale. The industry expects 2027 to 2029 to be the critical window for volume growth, prompting semiconductor, equipment and materials suppliers to position themselves across substrate fabrication, processing, inspection and specialty materials.
