AI Agents and Quantum Threats Force Cybersecurity Overhaul
The spread of generative AI and autonomous AI agents is making cyberattacks faster, cheaper and easier to scale, extending automation from reconnaissance and phishing to vulnerability exploitation. At the same time, advances in quantum computing threaten widely used public-key cryptography. The risk includes “harvest now, decrypt later” attacks, in which adversaries collect encrypted data today in hopes of unlocking it once sufficiently powerful quantum systems become available.
Industry, government and academic experts are urging companies to redesign security around three priorities: AI governance, hardware roots of trust and migration to post-quantum cryptography, or PQC. The immediate work includes mapping AI-agent permissions and data flows, establishing verifiable hardware identities, and inventorying systems that still depend on conventional encryption. Companies are being advised to prioritize upgrades according to business risk and how long sensitive data must remain protected.
