Prediction Markets Emerge as New Tool for Hedging Weather Risks
As extreme weather intensifies worldwide, traditional insurance often fails to cover small, everyday losses such as canceled flights or swings in vegetable prices. Weather prediction markets offered by platforms including Polymarket and Kalshi have emerged in recent years to address that gap. Using blockchain-based contracts with automatic settlement, they turn meteorological data such as temperatures and typhoons into hedging instruments, allowing small businesses to manage routine weather risks more flexibly.
BlockTempo reported on July 9, 2026, that Asia-Pacific prediction platform yoyo market recently added localized contracts covering typhoons and temperatures in Taiwan. The additions followed a June platform revamp backed by a funding round led by Longling Capital. Unlike traditional weather insurance, the platform offers low-cost contracts with a face value of $1 each. In contrast to Polymarket, it is applying for a license from the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission as it seeks to accelerate regulatory compliance for such hedging products.
