Block Launches Neighborhoods Network With 30,000 Square Merchants

1 reports · First detected 2026-09-03 · Last active 2026-09-03

Block is bringing its merchant and consumer businesses closer together through Neighborhoods, a distribution network linking Square sellers with Cash App users. The initiative also incorporates Afterpay’s buy-now, pay-later service, giving participating businesses another way to attract and convert shoppers. The strategy is important because it seeks to turn Block’s separate payments, commerce and consumer-finance products into a two-sided ecosystem in which merchant participation and customer engagement reinforce each other.

Block has formally launched Neighborhoods with 30,000 Square merchants already enrolled in the network, according to the latest report. The platform is designed to direct Cash App’s large user base toward participating physical businesses while helping those sellers reach consumers through Block’s broader product suite. By connecting Square, Cash App and Afterpay in one channel, Block is betting that discovery, payment and financing can generate sales in both directions and deepen the network effects across its ecosystem.

The Backstory

The history behind this event
Block Adds 30,000 Sellers to Neighborhoods Network2026-08-26 · 1 reports · similarity 0.90

Block’s Neighborhoods network connects merchants using its Square point-of-sale technology with consumers on Cash App, bringing payments, customer acquisition and rewards into a single local-commerce system. The initiative is strategically important because it gives small businesses a new way to encourage repeat visits while creating tighter links between two of Block’s core platforms and potentially increasing transaction activity across its ecosystem.

Block said Neighborhoods has added 30,000 sellers, significantly expanding the number of local businesses able to reach Cash App customers. Shoppers can earn as much as $10 in Local Cash when they spend at participating merchants and apply those rewards toward future purchases. The program is designed to turn individual transactions into recurring customer relationships, giving merchants an integrated marketing tool while offering consumers a direct financial incentive to return.

Block Expands Square Restaurant Push Across Cash App2026-08-26 · 1 reports · similarity 0.85

Block launched Neighborhoods in October 2025 to connect Cash App’s 59 million monthly users with local businesses among the roughly 4.5 million merchants that use Square. The service lets consumers discover, follow and order from nearby restaurants while paying through Cash App. For merchants, it combines ordering, payments, marketing and loyalty tools in one system, offering a lower-cost sales channel and an alternative to delivery platforms such as DoorDash, Grubhub and Uber Eats.

Block said on Aug. 25, 2026, that it added 30,000 Square restaurant merchants to Neighborhoods, though it did not disclose the network’s total enrollment or payment volume. Cash App customers account for about 10% of a participating seller’s gross payment volume after roughly nine months, on average. Neighborhoods orders carry a 1% processing fee, about half Square’s standard rate, while users can earn Local Cash worth as much as 10% of an order, capped at $10. Block funds the reward for 12 months.
