Family Feud Deepens Ondo Finance Succession Crisis

2 reports · First detected 2026-09-18 · Last active 2026-09-18

Ondo Finance is a leading platform for tokenized real-world assets, including products backed by U.S. Treasuries. Its founder, Nathan Allman, died suddenly at 32, without a will, on May 24, 2026. A probate court named his parents, Kathleen and Lawrence Allman, as heirs to an estate that includes a controlling equity interest and a large ONDO token holding, some of it scheduled to unlock over three years. The case exposes succession and key-person risks in a major crypto tokenization business.

The dispute intensified in September. Kathleen sued acting CEO Ian De Bode, accusing him of trying to seize control and challenging a roughly $11 million compensation package, including 26 million restricted token units worth more than $9 million. A Sept. 3 court order left De Bode as acting CEO and a board member. In a Sept. 16 filing, Allman’s half-sister, Dr. Lani Clinton, and Ondo investor David Chen asked a Hawaii court to impose a limited conservatorship over Kathleen’s inheritance, alleging cognitive decline, alcohol abuse and reckless spending. Kathleen denied the claims as baseless.

Ondo Finance, founded in 2021 by former Goldman Sachs digital-assets executive Nathan Allman, grew into a major provider of tokenized real-world assets, with about $3.5 billion in total value locked. Allman’s unexpected death in May 2026 at age 32 created a pivotal governance test for a business whose products include the USDY yield-bearing dollar token, the OUSG tokenized Treasury fund and Ondo Global Markets.

Ondo Finance said on May 26 that Ian De Bode, who had overseen strategy, products and daily operations for more than two years, would become chief executive. Reports on Aug. 7 said Allman’s mother, Kathleen Allman, acting as administrator of his estate, had taken legal action to gain control of the company and remove De Bode. She contends the estate inherited a controlling voting interest, escalating a dispute over the validity of Ondo’s post-founder leadership arrangements.
