Mastercard, Flowcart Bring Card Payments to East African Social Commerce

2 reports · First detected 2026-09-09 · Last active 2026-09-09

Social commerce is expanding across Africa as merchants increasingly use social media and messaging channels to showcase products, take orders and communicate with customers. Payments, however, can remain fragmented when shoppers must leave a conversation to complete a purchase. Mastercard’s partnership with Kenyan social-commerce company Flowcart aims to close that gap by embedding card payments directly into conversational shopping journeys, supporting wider digital-payment adoption among businesses and consumers.

The companies will begin the rollout in Kenya before expanding across East Africa and into South Africa, markets they identify as high-growth opportunities. The integration is designed to provide secure, seamless card checkout within Flowcart’s social and conversational-commerce workflows, shortening the path from customer engagement to payment. Mastercard and Flowcart did not disclose an investment amount, transaction target or detailed launch timetable for the broader regional expansion.

Fusheng Digital, a wholly owned subsidiary of Taiwan Mobile, operates the Taiwan Mobile Virtual Asset Exchange (TWEX). Mastercard brings its global payments network and technologies including Crypto Credential and the Multi-Token Network. The partnership will focus on linking virtual-asset trading, identity verification and bank payments while reducing risks in on-chain transfers, with regulatory compliance, consumer protection and fraud prevention as prerequisites.

Mastercard and Fusheng Digital announced the memorandum of understanding on March 16, 2026, without disclosing an investment amount or service launch date. They will explore three areas: using Crypto Credential to simplify wallet addresses and improve on-chain transfers, connecting virtual assets with bank accounts, and strengthening digital-asset trading and settlement infrastructure. The work could extend to everyday payments and cryptocurrency deposit and withdrawal services.
