Japan’s Bitbank Warns Prediction-Market Transfers Could Trigger Account Suspension
Prediction markets allow users to wager crypto assets on the outcomes of elections, sporting events and other developments. Japan has yet to issue specific guidance for such services, but participation may still violate criminal gambling laws. Gambling under Article 185 of the Penal Code carries a maximum fine of 500,000 yen. Polymarket also lists Japan among 35 restricted jurisdictions, underscoring the compliance risks for domestic exchanges.
Bitbank said on June 15, 2026, that it may suspend accounts if it detects deposits or withdrawals linked to prediction-market services such as Polymarket. The restrictions cover logins, crypto and yen deposits and withdrawals, and trading functions, and the company accepts no liability for resulting losses. Bitbank cited no specific regulatory order, indicating that it is tightening risk controls ahead of clearer rules.
