Doxo Agrees to Pay $2.1 Million in FTC Settlement
Doxo operates a third-party online platform for paying household obligations including utilities, medical bills and telecommunications charges. The Federal Trade Commission sued the company on April 25, 2024, alleging that its search advertisements and payment pages led consumers to believe Doxo was affiliated with their billers. The agency also accused Doxo of disclosing transaction fees late in the checkout process and enrolling users in its recurring doxoPLUS subscription without adequate disclosure.
Doxo agreed in August 2026 to pay $2.1 million to resolve the FTC’s allegations over misleading advertising, payment fees and subscription practices. The settlement also requires clearer disclosures about Doxo’s relationship with billers, the full cost of transactions and the terms of recurring charges. The agreement underscores heightened regulatory scrutiny of digital-payment interfaces, particularly when platform design can obscure a service provider’s identity or make optional fees and subscriptions difficult for consumers to understand.
