International Financial Reporting Standard 17 (IFRS 17)

IFRS 17 is an international financial reporting standard governing the measurement, profit recognition and disclosure of insurance contracts. A central feature is the contractual service margin (CSM), which allows profits to be recognized gradually over the insurance coverage period. Following Taiwan’s life insurance industry’s adoption of the standard in 2026, the Financial Supervisory Commission has tightened its oversight of CSM reporting, while insurers are adjusting asset allocations, capital-raising plans and dividend policies. Listing plans and labor issues are also drawing attention. The new regime will reshape life insurers’ earnings structures and the comparability of their financial statements while affecting financial holding company dividends, foreign-exchange risks and market valuations, making its implementation important to watch.
