Trump’s Delay of Xi Summit Sends Polymarket Odds Plunging

2 reports · First detected 2026-03-17 · Last active 2026-03-17

The Trump-Xi summit, originally scheduled for late March, is an important forum for the U.S. and Chinese leaders to address trade, technology and geopolitical disputes. Decentralized prediction platform Polymarket lets traders bet on event outcomes, making contract probabilities a real-time gauge of market expectations for political schedules. The summit’s timing was disrupted as the U.S.-Iran war intensified.

Trump requested a one-month delay to the summit in response to the U.S.-Iran war, sending the probability on a related Polymarket contract plunging from 75% to 5%. The White House most recently said the summit would instead take place in Beijing on May 14–15. Xi Jinping and his wife will also make a reciprocal visit to Washington after the talks, indicating that the trip has been postponed rather than canceled.

Polymarket is a decentralized prediction platform where users trade crypto assets based on event outcomes. Its contracts on Taiwanese politics are seen as a real-time gauge of how offshore capital views cross-strait relations and political stability. Taiwanese users who place cross-border bets, however, also face legal risks involving gambling, anti-money laundering rules and platform compliance.

Polymarket initially put the probability of a meeting between Kuomintang Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun and Chinese President Xi Jinping at 34%, and the chance of President Lai Ching-te leaving office before the end of 2026 at 12%. After the meeting was confirmed for April, the former probability surged from 38% to 96%. Once the handshake took place, the market’s top 50 traders had lost about $200,000 in total.
