Sovereign AI

Sovereign AI refers to countries or organizations retaining independent control over models, data, computing resources and deployment environments. The aim is to reduce reliance on foreign platforms and ensure systems meet local language, cultural, regulatory and cybersecurity requirements. Taiwan has recently accelerated efforts to develop language corpora, TAIDE, computing capacity and data governance, while companies have introduced on-premises AI agents. The United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Saudi Arabia and Armenia are pursuing similar strategies through government funding, open-source models or infrastructure partnerships. Key questions include whether these investments can produce practical models and industry applications, and how stakeholders will balance autonomy, cost and global technology cooperation.
